Description
MedCity Mafia Roller Derby team has been around for a little over a year and is beginning its first official season with A Bout You Can’t Refuse.
The MedCity Mafia follow the rules and guidelines set up by the Womens Flat
Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA). Currently the MedCity Mafia has 28
skaters and a handful of committed volunteers. Over the past few months
these girls have been skating hard (at least twice a week for 2.5 hours)
with the hopes of bringing home a win in their first bout against another
newly formed team, the S.C.A.R. Dolls of St. Cloud. There are 5 skaters
from each team on the track at all times and 7 skating refs. That is a lot
of rollerskates and bodies colliding. The goal of the game is for the
jammer, the skater with a star on her helmet, to successfully and legally
get through the pack of skaters, known as blockers, before the other jammer
does. Once a jammer is through the pack she skates as fast as she can
around the flat track and back into the pack in a hope to score points.
Each skater she passes legally upon the second time through the pack counts
as a point. Once the jam is called, at least every two minutes, new girls
come out on the track and they do it all again.
